Ethelra: The Old World

Ethelra is a large continent of established nations, islands, and regional cultures connected by old roads, sea routes, trade, scholarship, migration, and centuries of shared history. Its western waters include Vel'Nathar and the Isles of Alven'Nathiss, while the mainland extends through countries such as Célaine, Tessarion, Calvessa, Ostheria, and Vashkova. Farther north, Skorrheim and the surrounding seas form another distinct part of the continental world.

No single culture or political tradition defines Ethelra. Vel'Nathar developed around its island regions and maritime connections, Alven'Nathiss preserves the history of the Sera'drin, Tessarion has become a major center of artificing and renewed skyship construction, and Calvessa maintains some of the continent's strongest arcane institutions. Other regions developed around different religious, political, commercial, and local traditions, often with histories extending well beyond the borders of the nations that exist today.

The Thessaric Empire once connected much of mainland Ethelra under a single political system, and its influence remains visible in law, infrastructure, scholarship, and institutions inherited by later states. Its collapse did not produce a continent of direct successors following the same path. The nations that emerged from and around it have now existed independently for centuries, adapting what they inherited to their own circumstances while continuing to trade, compete, cooperate, and occasionally come into conflict with one another.
