The Calvessan Imperium
South of Vashkova, between Célaine and Ostheria, lies the Calvessan Imperium, a union of powerful city-states with deep roots in the former Thessaric Empire. Arcane scholarship carries unusual political weight in Calvessa, where mage-lords and wealthy commercial interests compete for influence within institutions that began taking shape before the old empire finally disappeared.
The city-states are bound together through the Arcane Concordium, which coordinates matters of shared policy, magical scholarship, and infrastructure while leaving substantial authority in local hands. Orenthos serves as the modern capital and seat of the Concordium, while cities such as Velthirios maintain their own political and commercial importance.
Thessaria, the former imperial capital, also survives within modern Calvessa. Much of the city was destroyed or buried during the Upheaval, but surviving districts were rebuilt and remain inhabited in 741 U.R. Beneath them lie the Silent Vaults, where collapsed sections of the old capital preserve ruins, magical infrastructure, and remnants of the Age of Wonders. Expeditions still enter the Vaults in search of lost records and artifacts, though many areas remain dangerous or inaccessible.
Calvessa regards itself as one of the strongest inheritors of Thessaric arcane tradition, but it is not a continuation of the old empire. Its cities have spent centuries developing institutions and rivalries of their own, leaving the Imperium united by shared interests without erasing the independence of the powers within it.
