The Inner Planes

The Inner Planes are the elemental foundations of the multiverse, comprising the four great realms of Air, Earth, Fire, and Water. In each, one element exists in its purest and most dominant form: open sky in Air, vast stone depths in Earth, endless oceans in Water, and ever-burning flame in Fire. Together, these planes provide much of the physical substance that shapes the Prime Material Plane.

Where neighboring Elemental Planes meet, their substances begin to overlap and intermingle. These unstable confluences are collectively known as the Elemental Chaos, producing regions where elements combine in different forms, such as magma where Fire meets Earth or ice where Water meets Air. These regions belong to the boundaries between the Elemental Planes rather than existing as planes in their own right.

Most of the Inner Planes are hostile to mortal life, though they are home to elemental beings and other creatures adapted to their conditions. Farther into each plane, its dominant element generally becomes more intense and less accommodating to outsiders, while its boundaries can give way to increasingly turbulent mixtures of elemental matter.
