Lessarith is the goddess of deception, manipulation, and the use of foreknowledge to influence mortal choices. She was the last member of the Triad to fully emerge from the divine power left unbound after Lyrael's death.

She prefers influence to direct force. Lessarith looks for whatever gives her leverage over a person, then uses that advantage to shape the choices available to them.

Symbol

Lessarith's symbol is a dark spiral formed from overlapping curved layers around a small violet diamond.

The spiral represents deception concealed beneath further deception. The diamond represents the promise, need, or desire that draws someone deeper into the arrangement.

Depictions

Lessarith is commonly depicted as a pale or grey-skinned woman with swept horns and dark wings.

Older traditions give her no consistent appearance. Stories from before her exile frequently describe her taking forms chosen to earn trust or avoid suspicion.

Her familiar horned and winged appearance became more common in religious art after her exile to the Abyss.

Divine Realm

Lessarith resides in the Endless Spiral within the Abyss.

The realm does not occupy a single layer. Instead, it extends through the plane as a network of connected passages and chambers with entrances hidden across many different regions of the Abyss.

These entrances may lie inside territories controlled by Demon Lords without placing those territories under Lessarith's authority. Once inside the Spiral, however, routes can shift at her will and connect places separated by great distances or by several Abyssal layers.

The Endless Spiral allows Lessarith to move between widely separated parts of the Abyss while remaining within her own realm.

Graz'zt was the first Demon Lord she created and remains particularly important to her. Lessarith shows genuine affection toward him despite his independence and does not require the same obedience from him that she expects from many of those around her.

Origins and Divine Role

Lessarith took shape as war, disease, and scarcity placed growing pressure on mortal societies.

Shortages and disrupted trade gave those who controlled necessities greater power over people with few alternatives. Information could be used in much the same way, particularly when trust had already begun to weaken.

Part of the divine power left after Lyrael's death gathered around these practices. Lessarith first became known through bargains, concealed motives, and opportunities offered at moments when refusal carried a cost.

Her followers appeared before her divine nature was widely understood. Some served her knowingly, while others acted on advice or bargains without knowing their source.

Lessarith encouraged existing rivalries, shortages, and distrust when doing so gave her greater influence. She rarely needed to create a conflict herself if an existing weakness could be made more useful.

When the Triad came into open conflict with the Celestial Accord, Lessarith avoided direct confrontation for as long as possible. After their defeat, she was driven into the Abyss.

Worship and Doctrine

Lessarith is rarely worshipped openly.

Her cults favor positions that provide access to information, essential supplies, or authority. Followers may remain within an institution for years while using what they learn to influence decisions or increase the dependence of others.

Bargains hold an important place in her worship. An offer does not need to be false to serve Lessarith. A truthful promise can still be manipulative when important information has been withheld or the circumstances have been arranged to leave the recipient with poor alternatives.

Secrets are treated as a form of leverage within the faith. Information is rarely given away when it can still be used to influence someone later.

Fate and Deception

Divination within Lessarith's faith is used to gain an advantage over those who lack the same knowledge.

Her followers study possible outcomes and decide what information should be revealed, delayed, or concealed. A true warning may be withheld until it becomes useful, while a possible future may be presented with greater certainty than it deserves.

Lessarith's connection to fate therefore lies in the use of foreknowledge to influence later choices. Her followers do not need to control another person's actions directly if they can control the information on which those actions are based.

Her Interventions Among Mortal Peoples

Lessarith has directly altered the histories of several peoples in Eldareth. These peoples later developed cultures, loyalties, and beliefs of their own beyond the purpose she originally intended for them.

The Ssith'katha

The ancestors of the Ssith'katha were southern peoples related to the Tavaska who had already diverged from them over a long period of time. Their communities had developed their own traditions, and their Shifting had increasingly taken reptilian and serpentine forms.

Lessarith later intervened among some of these peoples through pacts and ritual transformation. The changes she introduced became hereditary over subsequent generations and contributed to the emergence of the first Ssith'katha.

Tavaska traditions remember this intervention as a betrayal of Yssarel and the older relationship their peoples once shared. Ssith'katha traditions preserve different accounts of the same period.

The Threzkathar

Lessarith later turned her attention to a brood of Ul'Zar in the Hollow Depths.

The Ul'Zar were colossal arachnids driven largely by instinct. Lessarith altered some of them, granting greater self-awareness, ambition, and control over their own nature.

These became the first Threzkathar, later known as the Ascended Brood.

The Hae-Rang

The last of these transformations followed the destruction of Noryeong in Shen-Su.

After a great tsunami destroyed the city-state, Lessarith offered some of the surviving people a way to live beneath the sea in exchange for accepting her influence.

Those who agreed were transformed into the first Hae-Rang, gaining bodies suited to an aquatic life.
