Celestia, also known as Mount Celestia or the Seven Heavens, is the plane of Lawful Good among the Outer Planes.

It is associated with justice, compassion, responsibility, order, and mercy. Law within Celestia is expected to protect others and provide stability, while authority carries obligations toward those subject to it.

The plane takes the form of an immense sacred mountain rising from the Silver Sea. Its seven layers ascend one above another, with each stage of the journey taking travelers farther up Mount Celestia.

Among its divine realms is the Dawnbreak Bastion of Myranthus, the Dawnsinger, which stands within Mertion, the Platinum Heaven.

Structure and Environment

Celestia consists of seven layers: Lunia, Mercuria, Venya, Solania, Mertion, Jovar, and Chronias.

Together they form the ascent of Mount Celestia. The lowest reaches begin beside the Silver Sea, while the highest disappear into the light surrounding Chronias.

Each layer has its own terrain and characteristic illumination. Silver, gold, pearl, electrum, platinum, and the light reflected from gemstones distinguish the first six layers before the final ascent into the Illuminated Heaven.

Mountains, valleys, rivers, plains, settlements, and cultivated land occur throughout the plane. The environment generally becomes more difficult to reach rather than more hostile to life as travelers ascend.

Water flows down the mountain from the higher layers in streams, rivers, and waterfalls before eventually reaching the Silver Sea.

Movement and Travel

Travel through Celestia is primarily an upward journey.

Within an individual layer, roads, mountain paths, bridges, rivers, and established settlements provide conventional routes. Reaching the next layer is considerably more difficult.

Simply climbing to a high elevation does not guarantee passage upward.

Entrances to higher layers are usually associated with peaks, high structures, or other elevated locations, but Celestia responds to more than physical movement. Those seeking to ascend may have to demonstrate qualities connected to compassion, responsibility, honesty, restraint, or justice before the correct path becomes accessible.

The nature of these challenges differs between travelers.

Hidden passages and other methods of moving between layers are known to exist, particularly among inhabitants who know the mountain well, but such routes are rarely available to outsiders.

Connections to Other Planes

Celestia can be reached through the Astral Plane and through established planar portals.

Most external routes arrive in Lunia, the first layer. Direct passages into the higher heavens are considerably rarer.

This makes the shores of the Silver Sea the principal point of entry for most planar travelers.

Permanent portals may exist within settlements, divine realms, or places maintained by celestial inhabitants. Access to some of these passages is controlled.

Travel between the seven layers generally follows Celestia's internal routes rather than requiring a traveler to leave and re-enter the plane.

Law, Justice, and Mercy

Celestia embodies Lawful Good rather than law for its own sake.

Order is valued because it can protect communities, establish responsibilities, and prevent power from being exercised arbitrarily.

Justice is equally important, but mercy and circumstance are expected to be considered when judgment is made. Punishment without purpose or compassion does not represent the ideals associated with the plane.

Those granted authority are expected to remain accountable for how they use it.

This principle affects many of Celestia's settlements and institutions. Rules may be extensive, but they are generally intended to make expectations clear and protect those who live under them.

Celestia's alignment does not compel every inhabitant to behave identically. It describes the principles that most strongly shape the plane and its established societies.

The Ascent

The ascent through Celestia has long been associated with personal and spiritual development.

Each layer presents different conditions and challenges, and reaching the next is traditionally understood to require some degree of growth from the traveler.

For some, that may involve admitting a failure or accepting responsibility. Others may be tested through patience, service, restraint, courage, or the ability to balance justice with mercy.

These trials are not administered according to a single formal system.

A traveler may spend years on one layer without finding the path upward, while another may progress much more quickly.

Those who reach the highest layers are rare, and reliable accounts become increasingly difficult to find beyond Mertion.

Inhabitants

Archons are among the principal native celestials of Mount Celestia.

They serve as guardians, messengers, defenders, guides, and administrators throughout the Seven Heavens. Different kinds of archons perform different roles, and many assist travelers undertaking the ascent.

Angels can also be found throughout Celestia, including devas, planetars, and solars. Some serve divine powers, while others protect important locations or act against threats beyond the plane.

Other celestial creatures live within or regularly visit the Seven Heavens.

Mortal settlements can also be found, particularly on the lower layers. Some communities developed around portals, temples, pilgrimage routes, or places where mortals chose to settle permanently.

Aasimar are found among Celestia's mortal inhabitants and visitors, alongside people of many other origins.

Souls and Celestia

Celestia is one possible destination for mortal souls after death.

Souls destined for the Seven Heavens still pass through the transition overseen by Athael before continuing onward.

Those who arrive are often associated with lives shaped by compassion, duty, justice, protection of others, or similar principles.

Some remain within the lower heavens, while others undertake the ascent through the mountain.

Celestian traditions sometimes claim that souls who progress far enough can eventually take on forms similar to the archons. Whether this occurs to all who complete the ascent, only to some, or should be understood in another way is not clearly established.

The fate of those who ultimately reach Chronias is even less certain.

Natural Hazards

Celestia is physically hospitable to mortal life, but travel across Mount Celestia is not without danger.

The mountain contains steep slopes, cliffs, deep valleys, swift rivers, waterfalls, high elevations, and difficult passes. Conditions become particularly demanding in Solania and other mountainous regions.

Weather varies between layers and elevations.

The plane is also heavily defended. Important portals, settlements, divine realms, and routes into the higher heavens may be protected by celestial guardians.

Most travelers face greater difficulty finding the correct path than surviving the environment itself.

Survival

Celestia supports mortal life without requiring specialized planar protection.

Air, fresh water, food, and shelter are available throughout inhabited regions. Settlements provide opportunities to rest and resupply along many established routes.

Mountain equipment becomes increasingly useful on the higher slopes, particularly in layers with steep or icy terrain.

Travelers attempting the full ascent should be prepared for a journey that may take considerably longer than expected.

For ordinary visitors, Lunia and the lower heavens are much easier to reach than the upper layers.

Lunia, the Silver Heaven

Lunia is the first and lowest layer of Celestia.

It is known as the Silver Heaven and is surrounded by the immense Silver Sea at the base of Mount Celestia.

The layer rests beneath a dark sky filled with stars, casting a silver light across the water and lower slopes.

Most travelers arriving from another plane appear in the shallow waters or along the shoreline.

The waters of the Silver Sea are considered holy and are exceptionally clear. Islands and rocky formations rise from the water, while settlements, temples, and fortifications stand along the coast and lower slopes.

Streams and waterfalls descending from the higher heavens eventually return their water to the Silver Sea.

Lunia is the most accessible of Celestia's layers and contains the greatest regular contact with travelers from other planes.

Mercuria, the Golden Heaven

Mercuria is the second layer of Celestia and is known as the Golden Heaven.

A warm golden light fills the layer.

Its terrain consists primarily of mountains, deep valleys, fast-running rivers, and high plateaus. Many settlements are located on the broader plateaus where construction and travel are easier.

Mercuria has a strong association with remembrance and service.

Tombs, monuments, and memorials to those who died defending others can be found throughout the layer. Some communities maintain records of their deeds and hold ceremonies in their memory.

The layer also contains training grounds and fortifications used by Celestia's defenders.

Its higher paths eventually lead toward Venya.

Venya, the Pearly Heaven

Venya is the third layer of Celestia and is known as the Pearly Heaven.

Its light is softer than that of Mercuria, giving the sky and surrounding landscape a pale, pearlescent appearance.

Venya is one of the most fertile layers of the mountain.

Rolling hills, meadows, moors, cultivated fields, and gentle valleys cover much of its slopes. Farms are commonly arranged along terraces, making use of the mountain's elevation without requiring extensive clearing.

Brooks and small rivers run through the countryside.

Venya is cooler than the lower layers. Snow can gather across its higher slopes without preventing the valleys below from supporting crops and settlements.

The layer is closely associated with ordinary work, community, and the value placed on maintaining a stable and generous life.

Solania, the Electrum Heaven

Solania is the fourth layer of Celestia and is known as the Electrum Heaven or Crystal Heaven.

Its sky gives off a silver light, while much of the terrain consists of rugged mountains, deep valleys, and narrow passes.

Mist and fog frequently gather in the lower valleys.

Glaciers and snow cover many of the higher elevations, feeding rivers that descend toward the lower heavens. Avalanches, rockfalls, and difficult mountain routes make Solania one of the more physically demanding layers to cross.

Its mountains contain extensive deposits of metal, crystal, and gemstones.

Shrines, monasteries, and places of contemplation are scattered throughout the highlands. Many are located far from ordinary settlements and can only be reached through difficult climbs.

Those who travel to Solania often do so seeking study, reflection, or answers to difficult questions.

Mertion, the Platinum Heaven

Mertion is the fifth layer of Celestia and is known as the Platinum Heaven.

Its terrain differs considerably from the steep mountains of Solania.

Broad plains and open grasslands extend across much of the layer, interrupted by low hills, lakes, great citadels, sanctuaries, and other monumental structures.

Mertion is strongly associated with Celestia's defense.

Celestial forces train and gather throughout the layer, and many of its largest strongholds serve as fortifications, meeting places, or bases from which threats to the Upper Planes can be addressed.

Healing and recovery are equally prominent. Sanctuaries, hospitals, and places devoted to the treatment of injured travelers and defenders can be found throughout its inhabited regions.

Empyrea

Empyrea is one of the great cities of Mertion and among the best-known centers of healing in Celestia.

Its springs and sanctuaries are renowned for restorative properties, while healers, priests, celestial attendants, and scholars of medicine gather there from across the Upper Planes.

Travelers suffering from wounds, magical afflictions, or the effects of prolonged planar exposure sometimes undertake long pilgrimages to reach the city.

Empyrea is not a divine realm and welcomes a much broader population than the domains maintained by individual deities.

The Dawnbreak Bastion

The Dawnbreak Bastion is the divine realm of Myranthus, the Dawnsinger.

A perpetual sunrise hangs over the realm. Pale marble and glass are used throughout its halls, courtyards, and towers, carrying the morning light deep into the surrounding structures.

Phoenixes are closely associated with the Bastion and are said to nest among its highest towers.

Healing sanctuaries, temples, training grounds, and defensive works stand alongside one another throughout the realm. Myranthus's followers regard protection and recovery as closely linked duties, and warriors trained there are expected to understand what they defend before taking up arms.

Strength is expected to serve a clear purpose. Force used for conquest, revenge, or personal glory is regarded very differently from force used to protect others, and restraint is expected once danger has passed.

The Bastion reflects Myranthus's wider teachings on healing, courage, responsibility, and renewed hope.

Reaching Jovar requires finding one of the routes hidden among Mertion's elevated sites, citadels, and sacred places.

Jovar, the Glittering Heaven

Jovar is the sixth layer of Celestia and is known as the Glittering Heaven.

Gemstones occur throughout its landscape in quantities rarely encountered elsewhere.

Rubies, garnets, sapphires, and other stones emerge naturally from hills and slopes, many carrying their own faint light. Entire regions can glitter as the surrounding illumination reflects from exposed crystal.

The abundance of gemstones has little connection to ordinary wealth. Celestia's inhabitants generally leave them where they formed rather than mining them for trade.

Jovar is one of the least commonly visited layers of the plane.

Those who reach it have already completed most of Celestia's ascent, and much of the activity there concerns preparation for the final journey.

The Heavenly City

The Heavenly City stands among the highest reaches of Jovar.

It rises in seven ascending tiers and serves as the principal gathering place for those who have progressed far enough to seek the final passage toward Chronias.

Temples, halls of contemplation, residences, archives, and places devoted to preparation for the last stage of the ascent occupy its terraces.

The city is inhabited by celestials, petitioners, and others who have reached the upper reaches of Mount Celestia. Some remain there indefinitely rather than attempting to continue.

The path from the highest tier into Chronias is not continuously open and cannot be reached through physical ascent alone.

Only a small number of travelers are able to continue.

Chronias, the Illuminated Heaven

Chronias is the seventh and highest layer of Celestia.

It is known as the Illuminated Heaven.

Very little reliable information exists about its environment.

Those who reach Chronias rarely return, and surviving accounts from the lower heavens describe it primarily as an overwhelming region of light beyond the summit of Mount Celestia.

Religious traditions offer several explanations for what happens there.

Some claim that those who complete the ascent become permanently united with Celestia. Others describe Chronias as a place where the final imperfections of a soul are removed before it enters a different state of existence.

Neither explanation has been confirmed.

Even powerful celestials generally speak of Chronias cautiously, and detailed descriptions of its interior are absent from most planar records.

For scholars in Eldareth, Chronias remains one of the least understood regions of the Upper Planes.
