The Eisyli

The Eisyli (AY-sih-lee), also known as Shimmerwings, are small magical entities associated with Galarium and Eldareth's ley network. They appear most often around active deposits or during periods of unusual magical change, remaining for a time before eventually fading or dispersing into motes of light.

Eisyli resemble tiny winged insects, most often compared to bees, with bodies formed from luminous crystal and light. Their coloration reflects the same range found in Galarium, including blues, cyan, gold, amber, violet, and combinations of these colors. Their translucent wings make little or no sound in flight.

They are not biological creatures. Eisyli do not eat, reproduce, build nests, or establish lasting populations, and no complete life cycle has ever been observed.

Formation

Eisyli form in association with Galarium, though the exact conditions that produce them are not fully understood.

During periods of unusual magical activity, light and small motes may gather around an active Galarium formation before taking on the familiar winged shape. The crystal itself remains intact, and once formed the Eisyli may travel far from the deposit where they first appeared.

Some remain visible for only a few hours or days, while others have been observed for much longer. Eventually they disappear, usually fading from view or dispersing into faint points of light.

Attempts to deliberately produce Eisyli have met with little success. Their appearance seems to depend upon conditions that artificers have not yet learned to reproduce reliably.

Galarium Pollination

One of the most distinctive Eisyli behaviors resembles the pollination of flowers by bees.

Eisyli frequently move between Galarium formations and areas of concentrated ley activity. Fine luminous traces can sometimes be seen clinging to them as they travel, and deposits regularly visited by Eisyli have shown unusually healthy growth over long periods.

This has led scholars to believe that their movement helps encourage the formation and recovery of Galarium where suitable ley conditions already exist.

Eisyli cannot create Galarium in places where those conditions are absent. Their activity appears to assist a natural process rather than cause it outright.

The discovery of this relationship has made Eisyli an increasingly important subject of study as older Galarium deposits continue to recover from the Upheaval.

Ley Lines and Magical Instability

Eisyli respond strongly to changes in the surrounding magical environment.

They are often observed near active ley nexuses, changing currents, recovering magical sites, and Galarium deposits undergoing unusual activity. They have also appeared around areas affected by Wild Magic, planar disturbances, and other significant arcane events.

Minor magical disturbances have occasionally become less pronounced while Eisyli were present, leading some researchers to suggest that their activity may contribute to the stability of healthy magical environments. Whatever effect they have is limited. Eisyli cannot repair a severed ley line, restore a collapsed nexus, or reverse major damage to the Weave.

Their appearance also does not necessarily signal danger. Many gatherings occur during periods of harmless change or gradual recovery.

Guidance

Most Eisyli pay little attention to individual people, but rare examples have been known to accompany a particular traveler for extended periods.

Such an Eisyli may fly ahead along a road, wait when the traveler stops, return when they hesitate, or repeatedly appear at crossroads and along particular routes. Some remain with the same person for days before disappearing.

The behavior has given rise to numerous stories of Shimmerwings leading travelers toward places they otherwise might never have found.

No one knows why this occurs.

Some regard an Eisyli guide as an omen or blessing. Arcane scholars are generally more cautious, suggesting that the creature may be responding to a magical disturbance or destination that the traveler is also approaching without realizing it.

The Eisyli themselves offer no explanation.

Awareness and Communication

Eisyli do not speak and have never demonstrated language.

They nevertheless show more awareness than simple drifting magical phenomena. They can recognize individuals, follow them over considerable distances, wait for them, investigate nearby objects, and respond deliberately to changes in their surroundings.

Whether this represents intelligence or an unusually complex magical instinct remains debated.

They do not appear to form communities or maintain individual relationships in the way biological creatures do. Their behavior is usually focused on their immediate surroundings, magical activity, or whatever has attracted their attention.

Attempts to capture Eisyli are rarely successful. They can land upon people and objects, but when seized or confined their luminous forms often slip free or briefly disperse before reappearing nearby. No convincing evidence has shown that this is the result of planar travel.

Val'Syra and Dreams

Eisyli have occasionally been recorded near places where Val'Syra, the plane of dreams, draws unusually close to the Material Plane.

People sleeping near large gatherings sometimes report exceptionally vivid dreams, and Dream-Touched individuals appear particularly sensitive to their presence. Similar observations have been made during periods of unusual activity within Val'Syra.

There is no evidence that Eisyli originate there.

Whether the Eisyli influence these dreams or simply respond to the same conditions remains uncertain.

Eisyli Spirals

Large gatherings of Eisyli sometimes form a phenomenon known as an Eisyli Spiral.

During a Spiral, dozens or even hundreds of Eisyli gather above the same location and begin circling together in a broad, coordinated pattern. The formation may persist for minutes or much longer, sometimes tightening or changing speed as the surrounding magical conditions shift.

Spirals have been recorded during major ley activity, planar disturbances, periods of Wild Magic, and other significant changes in local magic.

They have traditionally been regarded as omens, although the Eisyli give no indication of what the event will involve. Arcane scholars instead treat a Spiral as evidence that an important magical change is already underway.

Their usefulness as a warning remains limited. Some Spirals precede dramatic events, while others disperse without anything immediately obvious occurring.

Luminous Traces

Eisyli frequently leave faint trails or motes of light behind them as they fly.

These traces resemble the internal colors of Galarium and fade quickly after the Eisyli passes. They are most visible around large gatherings or active deposits.

Attempts to preserve or collect the motes have produced little of value, and they are not known to possess any consistent magical property of their own.

Study and Folklore

Despite centuries of observation, much about the Eisyli remains uncertain.

Their association with Galarium is well established, as is their sensitivity to changing ley conditions. Their role in Galarium growth is increasingly accepted, while their occasional guidance of individuals and relationship with unusual dreams remain much harder to explain.

No reliable method of summoning or commanding an Eisyli has been discovered.

For scholars, they remain an unusual part of Eldareth's magical environment whose behavior can sometimes reveal changes that conventional instruments have not yet detected.

For everyone else, the appearance of a Shimmerwing is often treated more simply: something in the magic around them has begun to change.
