Galarium is a naturally occurring magical crystal found where ley energy remains strongly concentrated and stable for long periods. The largest deposits usually form around major ley nexuses, though smaller formations can develop along powerful currents or in other places where arcane energy remains unusually concentrated.

Its crystalline structure is exceptionally receptive to magic. Galarium can receive, retain, conduct, regulate, and release magical energy with an efficiency few other natural materials can match. These properties made it one of the foundations of arcane engineering during the Age of Wonders and continue to make it highly valuable in modern enchantment, artifice, and magical research.

Galarium does not generate magical power on its own. A crystal must receive energy from a spell, ley connection, enchanted system, or another magical source before that energy can be directed or retained.

Physical Appearance

Natural Galarium forms as translucent or semi-translucent crystal with a pronounced inner glow. Its most common colors include blue, cyan, gold, amber, and occasional violet, with several colors often appearing within the same formation.

The colors do not represent distinct varieties of Galarium. A single crystal may shift gradually from cool blue or cyan into warmer gold and amber, particularly around its brightest internal regions.

Large natural deposits commonly form in irregular clusters, while extracted and worked pieces are usually cut into smaller, more defined shapes according to their intended use.

Healthy Galarium can occasionally release subtle signs of the magic passing through it. Faint motes of light may drift from an active deposit, thin arcs may briefly cross between neighboring crystal faces, or the internal glow may brighten as the crystal receives additional power. Especially large or heavily charged formations can also produce a low magical hum.

These effects are normally mild. Stable Galarium does not constantly spark or discharge energy simply because it contains magic.

Formation and Regrowth

Galarium forms extremely slowly.

The exact process remains the subject of arcane study, but stable concentrations of ley energy are known to provide the conditions necessary for new crystalline growth. Major nexuses are particularly favorable, which is why many of Eldareth's richest deposits occur around them.

A large deposit is therefore often an indication that the surrounding ley currents have remained powerful and stable for a considerable period of time.

Mined deposits can gradually regrow if those conditions remain intact, though the process takes centuries rather than years. Recovery is slow enough that a heavily worked deposit may remain depleted for generations.

Since the gradual stabilization of the ley network following the Upheaval, scholars have documented both renewed growth within older deposits and the formation of Galarium along currents that changed course during the catastrophe.

Eisyli, small luminous entities frequently found around Galarium, have also been observed moving between deposits and areas of concentrated ley activity. Their presence appears to assist natural Galarium growth where suitable conditions already exist, though they cannot cause the crystal to form where those conditions are absent.

Magical Properties

Galarium is best understood as an arcane medium rather than a simple source of stored power.

A prepared crystal can receive magical energy and retain it until that energy is needed. It can also conduct power through a larger system, regulate unstable fluctuations, or release a charge in a controlled manner.

How a particular piece behaves depends heavily on how it has been refined and enchanted.

One crystal may serve primarily as a conductor between several components. Another may hold a limited magical charge. Larger cores can regulate the flow of power through complex machinery, while carefully prepared pieces can help preserve a spell or magical effect until it is deliberately activated.

The amount of power Galarium can safely handle depends on the size, purity, condition, and preparation of the crystal, as well as the structure surrounding it. Small shards can support relatively modest enchantments, while the enormous cores once used during the Age of Wonders could receive and direct extraordinary quantities of magical energy.

Every crystal has limits. Forcing too much power into Galarium can damage or destroy it.

Refinement and Enchantment

Raw Galarium usually requires careful preparation before it can be used in sophisticated magical devices.

The crystal may be cut, shaped, stabilized, aligned, enchanted, or mounted within a specially constructed framework according to its intended purpose. A crystal prepared to retain a spell may require very different treatment from one intended to regulate power flowing through a ley conduit.

This versatility made Galarium particularly important to artificers. Once reliable refinement techniques became widespread, the same underlying material could be adapted to a wide range of magical systems.

Galarium is common in advanced magical item construction, especially where an enchantment needs to retain, transfer, regulate, or repeatedly receive magical power. Spell-storing objects, arcane foci, spellshards, power cores, and many other devices may incorporate it.

It is not required for all magical items. Enchantment existed long before Galarium was widely used, and many traditional forms of magic function perfectly well without it.

The Galarium Revolution

Galarium was known in some form long before it became the foundation of an industry.

The decisive breakthrough came around 1500 B.U., when Giznat artificers developed reliable methods for refining, charging, controlling, and incorporating the crystal into repeatable magical technology.

This period became known as the Galarium Revolution.

The techniques spread rapidly and were expanded by artificers, scholars, and engineers throughout Eldareth. Galarium soon found use in enchanted tools, lighting, transportation, constructs, defenses, communication systems, industrial machinery, portals, and other large-scale magical works.

Its importance did not come from replacing older forms of magic. Galarium allowed certain magical effects to be produced, maintained, and distributed much more reliably and on a far greater scale.

The Great Leyline Conduits

By approximately 1350 B.U., Galarium had become central to the construction of the Great Leyline Conduits.

These vast systems drew power from major ley currents and redistributed it across considerable distances. Large Galarium cores received and conducted that energy while helping regulate its flow through the wider network.

This allowed cities, transportation systems, magical defenses, workshops, and other infrastructure to benefit from major ley currents without every individual device needing to be constructed directly over a nexus.

The conduits became one of the defining achievements of the Age of Wonders and greatly increased the importance of both Galarium deposits and ley nexuses.

Extraction

Mining Galarium requires considerably greater care than extracting ordinary stone or metal.

Natural Galarium is generally stable, but active deposits can contain or conduct substantial amounts of magical energy. Carelessly striking a heavily charged formation, fracturing it in the wrong place, or using disruptive magic during extraction can cause sudden discharge.

Professional mining therefore relies upon specialized tools, trained workers, and careful study of the surrounding ley conditions.

Responsible extraction does not normally damage the underlying ley line simply because crystal has been removed. A deposit can be depleted, however, and excessive excavation around a major nexus can disturb the surrounding magical environment.

The greatest risks arise when mining is combined with direct manipulation of the ley currents themselves. Redirecting power, drawing excessive amounts through a nexus, or operating poorly regulated equipment can place far greater strain on the area than ordinary extraction.

Because rich deposits can take centuries to recover, access to Galarium remains heavily regulated in many regions.

Scarcity and Political Importance

By the later centuries of the Age of Wonders, demand for Galarium had grown enormously.

Rich deposits became more difficult to find, established mines were driven deeper, and expeditions traveled farther in search of new sources. Major deposits and the nexuses associated with them became economically and politically valuable.

During the conflicts of the Sundering Years, Galarium mines, ley nexuses, and conduit routes could become strategic assets. Controlling them meant controlling access to transportation, defenses, industry, and other systems upon which much of advanced civilization had come to depend.

The resulting scarcity was therefore more complicated than simple overmining. By that period, entire societies were drawing upon, redirecting, and distributing ley energy through Galarium systems on an unprecedented scale.

Instability and Failure

Galarium is not inherently volatile, but it becomes dangerous when subjected to conditions beyond what the crystal or surrounding system can safely withstand.

Failures can result from severe overcharging, abrupt ley surges, damage to a crystal while it is heavily charged, poor regulation, damaged conduit systems, or exposure to unusually unstable magic.

Warning signs can include spreading fractures, sudden changes in brightness, repeated arcs of energy, an increasingly pronounced hum, or other unusual magical disturbances.

When a highly charged Galarium crystal fails, the energy passing through or retained within it can be released in a very short period. Small failures may damage only the crystal and nearby equipment, while the destruction of a major core can produce a catastrophic arcane explosion.

Under extreme conditions, such failures can also produce Spellfire.

Not every damaged or discolored piece of Galarium behaves in the same way. Rare crystals recovered from magical disaster sites have shown changes that do not match ordinary overload or structural damage, and some remain hazardous long after the event that altered them. Their causes and properties are not always understood.

The Upheaval

Galarium suffered catastrophic failures across Eldareth during the Upheaval.

As the Mythal fractured and ley currents shifted across the world, Galarium systems connected to the network suddenly received power under conditions they had never been designed to withstand. Cores overloaded, crystals fractured, and stored or conducted magical energy discharged through the infrastructure surrounding them.

The resulting failures destroyed ley stations, workshops, vehicles, arcane vessels, buildings, and other systems throughout the Age of Wonders. Cities with dense Galarium infrastructure or major conduit connections were especially vulnerable to cascading failures.

In the aftermath, many survivors blamed centuries of Galarium extraction and increasingly aggressive manipulation of the ley network for the catastrophe. The theory remains debated. It is well established that reckless mining and ley manipulation can damage local magical systems, but no explanation for the initial worldwide failure has ever been conclusively proven.

After the Upheaval

The Upheaval dramatically reduced Eldareth's supply of usable Galarium.

Some deposits were destroyed outright. Others became unstable, were buried beneath ruined settlements, or were left far from the ley currents that had once sustained them. The collapse of transportation and arcane infrastructure also made many surviving sources difficult to reach or exploit.

For centuries, Galarium remained far scarcer than it had been during the Age of Wonders.

By the Age of Resurgence, the gradual stabilization of the ley network began to change this. Older deposits showed signs of renewed growth, new formations were discovered along altered ley currents, and improved mapping techniques allowed scholars to locate sources that had previously been overlooked.

This renewed availability has supported the return of increasingly sophisticated arcane engineering, although Galarium remains far from the abundance and industrial scale recorded during the height of the Age of Wonders.
