Uncover Secrets and Expose Deception

Inquisitives are masters of observation, deduction, and discerning the truth behind appearances. Whether working as investigators, spies, profilers, or relentless seekers of hidden knowledge, they notice details others overlook and learn to turn that understanding into an advantage.

An Inquisitive studies both creatures and situations. A revealing expression, an inconsistency in a story, the placement of an object, or a momentary flaw in an opponent's defenses can provide all the information they need. In battle, that same discipline allows them to anticipate an enemy's actions and expose weaknesses for themselves and their allies.

Level 3: Observant Scrutiny

Your keen senses and analytical mind allow you to notice subtle details and draw conclusions quickly.

You gain the following benefits.

Trained Eye

You gain proficiency in the Insight and Investigation skills.

If you already have proficiency in either skill, you instead gain Expertise in that skill.

If you already have Expertise in either skill, choose another skill in which you have proficiency. You gain Expertise in that skill instead.

Detail Oriented

As a Bonus Action, you can make one of the following checks:

  • A Wisdom (Insight) check to discern a creature's intentions or determine whether it is being deceptive.

  • A Wisdom (Perception) check to locate a hidden creature or object.

  • An Intelligence (Investigation) check to deduce information from a clue, object, or scene.

Calculated Assessment

When you succeed on a Wisdom (Insight) check against a creature using Detail Oriented, you can learn one of that creature's damage Vulnerabilities, Resistances, or Immunities that you don't already know, if it has any.

The DM chooses which trait you learn.

Once you learn a trait from a creature using this feature, you can't do so against that creature again until you finish a Long Rest.

Level 3: Insightful Combatant

You can study an opponent's behavior and use what you learn to predict its defenses.

As a Bonus Action, choose one creature you can see within 30 feet of yourself. Make a Wisdom (Insight) check contested by the creature's Charisma (Deception) check.

On a success, the creature is subject to your Insightful Combatant for 1 minute.

For the duration, you can deal Sneak Attack damage to that creature without having Advantage on the attack roll and without another enemy of the target being within 5 feet of it, provided you don't have Disadvantage on the attack and the attack otherwise qualifies for Sneak Attack.

In addition, once on each of your turns when you deal Sneak Attack damage to that creature, you can reduce the Sneak Attack die cost of one Cunning Strike or Devious Strike option you use against it by 1d6, to a minimum cost of 0d6.

On a failed contested check, you can't use Insightful Combatant against that creature again until the start of your next turn.

Level 9: Steadfast Investigator

Your concentration and powers of observation have become difficult to disrupt.

You gain the following benefits.

Focused Mind

You have Advantage on Wisdom (Perception) and Intelligence (Investigation) checks concerning a creature, object, or location if you spend at least 1 minute observing or examining the subject before making the check.

Unwavering Gaze

You have Advantage on saving throws against Illusion spells and magical illusion effects.

In addition, you have Advantage on saving throws you make to avoid or end the Charmed or Frightened condition when that condition is caused by a creature currently subject to your Insightful Combatant.

Level 13: Expose Deception

You can recognize the moment when a creature's deception reveals an opening.

When you succeed on a Wisdom (Insight) or Intelligence (Investigation) check made using Detail Oriented to uncover a creature's lie, disguise, illusion, or other deception, you can expose the flaw you have discovered.

Until the end of your next turn, attack rolls against that creature have Advantage if the attacker can see or hear you.

If the triggering check revealed a disguise, illusion, false appearance, or similar deception, you and creatures who can see or hear you also recognize that specific deception for the duration.

Once you use this feature, you can't use it again until you finish a Short or Long Rest.

Level 17: Pierce the Veil

Your powers of observation have reached a supernatural degree, allowing you to perceive truths hidden beneath magic and deception.

As a Magic action, choose one creature, object, or specific location you can see within 60 feet of yourself.

For 1 minute, you gain the following benefits regarding the chosen target:

  • You automatically recognize whether the target is affected by an illusion, magical disguise, shapechanging effect, or magical transformation that alters its appearance or form. If it has a magically concealed or altered form, you perceive its true form.

  • You learn whether the target is affected by a magical influence that alters its emotions or behavior, such as the Charmed or Frightened condition, and you learn the general nature of that influence.

  • You have Advantage on Wisdom (Insight) and Intelligence (Investigation) checks concerning the target.

  • If the target is a creature, damage dealt by your attacks against it ignores its damage Resistances. This benefit doesn't bypass damage Immunities.

Once you use this feature, you can't use it again until you finish a Long Rest.
