II. The Arcane Renaissance
The knowledge carried from Ilyr'dor did not remain behind the mists of Alven'Nathiss.
Copies of Sera'drin texts gradually passed into the hands of scholars beyond Ael'delar, while students carried what they had learned into Vel'Nathar, Ethelra, and other lands connected by established routes. Schools of spellcraft began to appear where arcane knowledge had once depended upon a single teacher, a family tradition, or the chance birth of a sorcerer.
For the first time on the Material Plane, generations of mages could work from the same body of written knowledge. Spells could be reproduced, theories challenged, and discoveries preserved long enough for others to improve upon them.
This growth in arcane learning coincided with the rise of new political powers.
In central Ethelra, the lands surrounding Thessaria were drawn together beneath a growing imperial authority. Roads connected distant provinces, trade moved across wider territories, and the cities of the Thessaric Empire attracted merchants, scholars, engineers, and mages from throughout the region.
Arcane study flourished within that environment.
Magic gradually found uses beyond the work of individual spellcasters. Enchantment entered construction, communication, navigation, and specialized crafts, while scholars experimented with ways of making magical effects more reliable and easier to reproduce.
The change was uneven. Great cities and prosperous centers of trade adopted new practices quickly, while smaller settlements often continued much as they had for generations. In many places, trained wizardry remained rare, expensive, or regarded with suspicion.
Sorcerers were sometimes viewed differently from the growing class of trained mages. Their abilities emerged without formal study and were often understood as something inherited or bestowed, while wizardry represented a form of power that could deliberately be pursued.
As interest in arcane knowledge grew, so did the desire to find new materials with which to work.
Expeditions pushed beyond established roads, crossed mountain ranges, and followed rivers into regions that remained poorly mapped. New deposits of valuable metals entered wider trade, including adamantine and mithril already prized by smiths and enchanters for their unusual properties.
None would transform the age as profoundly as the crystalline mineral whose potential was uncovered by the Giznat goblins.
During one such expedition, the Giznat encountered deposits of a crystalline substance unfamiliar to them, its surface shimmering with an iridescent sheen. Its true value became apparent only when they began exposing it to magic.
The crystal conducted arcane energy with remarkable efficiency.
They came to call it Galarium.
The Giznat experimented relentlessly with the mineral, cutting it into different shapes, combining it with metals, and testing how it responded to enchantment. Many of their earliest attempts failed. Crystals fractured, stored charges dissipated, and unstable devices sometimes released their magic without warning.
Eventually, they developed reliable methods for preparing Galarium so that it could retain, conduct, and regulate magical energy, releasing stored power later when needed.
That discovery changed everything.
Certain magical effects no longer needed to be sustained continuously by the spellcaster who had shaped them. Power could be stored within an object and used long after the original mage had departed.
From this work emerged new artificer traditions, whose craft treated magic as something that could be incorporated directly into tools, weapons, armor, and mechanisms. Their creations combined spellcraft with engineering in ways earlier generations had rarely attempted.
Knowledge of Galarium spread along the same networks that had carried wizardry beyond Alven'Nathiss. Imperial scholars, independent artificers, dwarven craftsmen, and other arcane institutions began developing their own methods for cutting, charging, and stabilizing the mineral.
The first changes appeared in the cities.
Devices that had once required constant magical attention could now operate through stored power. Lighting, workshops, civic works, and increasingly complex mechanisms became easier to maintain, and constructs could perform dangerous or repetitive tasks without requiring a mage to remain beside them.
Galarium had become the foundation of a new kind of arcane industry.
Demand rose rapidly.
Scholars eventually recognized that the mineral appeared most often around ley lines, particularly near places where several of the great magical currents converged. Expeditions began following those currents in search of richer deposits, and settlements grew around mines capable of supplying the workshops and cities that now depended upon them.
Control of those deposits soon became politically important. A productive Galarium mine could bring wealth, strengthen armies, and support increasingly ambitious magical works. Claims were disputed, borders shifted, and rival powers sometimes fought over access to the richest sources.
As artificers learned to use Galarium more effectively, the scale of their creations grew.
Among the most celebrated were the first skyships.
Powered through arcane systems built around Galarium, these vessels crossed terrain that had once made travel difficult or slow. Mountains, forests, and stretches of open water no longer presented the same barriers, though the ships remained rare and enormously expensive during their earliest generations.
They quickly found uses in trade, exploration, and war.
By then, the Thessaric Empire had become one of the great powers of Ethelra. Its wealth and expanding institutions allowed scholars and engineers to undertake projects beyond the means of most independent realms, and attention increasingly turned toward the ley lines themselves.
Mages had studied those currents for centuries and understood that places where they crossed possessed unusual magical strength. The engineers of the Age of Wonders sought to do more than work near them.
They sought to harness them.
Great nexus structures were raised around powerful intersections and connected through networks built around immense Galarium cores. These became the Great Leyline Conduits, capable of drawing upon the magical currents beneath Eldareth and distributing that power across the regions connected to them.
Cities linked to the network gained access to quantities of magical energy that individual spellcasters could never have supplied. Arcane infrastructure expanded rapidly, new forms of transport became possible, and some routes eventually supported stable portals capable of carrying people and goods across great distances.
For those living within the largest cities, wonders once reserved for archmages and rulers began to enter ordinary life.
Yet beyond those centers, much of Eldareth remained unchanged. Villages still relied upon hearthfire and hand tools. Remote settlements saw little Galarium at all, while others rejected its use by choice.
For a time, the old and new existed beside one another.
But within the academies, workshops, and great cities of the Age of Wonders, each discovery gave rise to another. Magic could now be studied, stored, engineered, transported, and drawn directly from the currents running through the world itself.
And with every success, the limits of what mortals believed possible moved a little farther away.
