The Way of the Celestine

The Way of the Celestine is the central spiritual tradition of the Venthari.
It developed from knowledge passed to the first Venthari by the surviving Naerids and from disciplines created afterward to help them understand and control their inherited psionic abilities.
The Way is not centered on the worship of a deity. Its teachings instead emphasize the responsibilities that accompany psionic power, especially abilities capable of entering, influencing, or controlling another mind.
Clerics of the Way of the Celestine commonly follow the Mind, Order, or Peace domains.
Philosophy and Core Beliefs
The teachings of the Way are organized around the Three Rings of Restraint: Thought, Action, and Force.
Thought concerns awareness of the self. Followers are taught to recognize their emotions, fears, desires, and assumptions before allowing them to shape a decision.
Action governs what follows from those thoughts. Emotion is accepted as a natural part of experience, but followers are expected to reflect before allowing anger, fear, grief, or ambition to determine how they act.
Force concerns the use of psionic ability. Powers that enter another person's thoughts, alter their emotions, or compel their actions receive particular scrutiny because of the harm they can cause when used without restraint.
The Three Rings guide followers in considering their purpose, the consequences of using their abilities, and whether a less intrusive course is available. They regulate the use of power without forbidding it.
The Way also preserves a responsibility inherited from the Naerids. Venthari tradition holds that their predecessors entrusted them with knowledge of dangers beyond Eldareth and charged them with remaining watchful for signs that those threats might return.
The Path, The Grey, and The Fallen
The Way describes three broad relationships with its teachings.
The Path is the standard taught within Venthari monasteries. Those who follow it seek to uphold the Three Rings while developing their abilities and carrying out the responsibilities inherited from the Naerids.
The Grey includes Venthari who remain connected to the Way but believe some circumstances justify breaking its restraints. They may continue to see themselves as protectors and adherents of its broader purpose, though the monasteries regard this position cautiously because repeated exceptions can gradually erode the discipline the Three Rings are intended to preserve.
The Fallen have rejected those restraints and use their abilities without the ethical limits expected by the Way. They may intrude upon thoughts, manipulate emotions, impose commands, or use psionic power primarily as a means of control.
These distinctions are based on conduct and the use of power rather than a person's emotional state.
Practices and Rituals
Meditation is a regular part of the Way and is used to examine thought and emotion, strengthen concentration, and develop greater control over psionic abilities.
At the Aerie of Echoed Thoughts, some practitioners meditate near the Athrakan Obelisk, commonly known as the Celestine Obelisk, while others use secluded areas of the surrounding Greyspires or private chambers within the monastery.
Psionic training begins with control and precision. Students practice using their abilities deliberately and learn when restraint is the better choice, with particular attention given to telepathy and other powers that directly affect another mind.
Study holds equal importance. Venthari preserve knowledge inherited from the Naerids alongside their own research into psionics, history, and the planes. The Codex of Silent Sky is among the texts associated with this tradition.
Vigils are held around the Athrakan Obelisk and at other sites used to watch for unusual psionic or planar activity. Particular attention is given to signs associated with the Shattered Song and the dangers once faced by the Naerids.
The Oath of the Silent Sky summarizes the Three Rings:
"My thought is tempered, my action measured, my force restrained."
The oath is used during training and ceremonies connected to the responsibilities of the Way.
Goals
The Way places particular importance on guardianship and the preservation of knowledge.
Followers are expected to watch for threats connected to psionic or planar disturbances and to protect Eldareth from dangers resembling those encountered by the Naerids.
They also preserve, study, and expand upon the knowledge entrusted to the Venthari. Understanding unfamiliar threats is considered an essential part of preparing for them, while personal discipline ensures that the abilities used in that work do not themselves become a source of harm.
Organization
The Aerie of Echoed Thoughts in the Greyspires is the principal center of the Way. It serves as a monastery, training ground, archive, and place of study, and houses the Athrakan Obelisk alongside records concerning the Naerids, Venthari history, and the teachings of the tradition.
Elders and masters oversee instruction, guide psionic training, preserve the monastery's records, and prepare students for responsibilities beyond the Aerie.
Practice of the Way extends well beyond the monastery. Venthari living elsewhere may continue its disciplines and teachings without direct supervision from the Aerie.
People from other cultures may also study at Venthari monasteries and learn the Way's meditation, philosophy, and disciplines. Such study does not grant the inherited psionic abilities carried by the Venthari.
Holy Sites
The Aerie of Echoed Thoughts is the most important center of the Way and the location of the Athrakan Obelisk, commonly known as the Celestine Obelisk.
The Obelisk was carried aboard Ithis Veyra and entrusted to the monks who became the first Venthari by the surviving Naerids. The Naerids had themselves discovered it long before reaching Eldareth and spent generations studying its functions. It remains one of the oldest surviving links between the Venthari and their predecessors, though much of its nature is still not understood.
Lake Morren also holds considerable historical importance. Ithis Veyra crashed there, leading to the first encounter between the monks and the surviving Naerids.
The lake is visited for ceremonies and acts of remembrance connected to those events.
Relationship with Others
Venthari followers of the Way are sometimes regarded as secretive, particularly because of their remote communities and their ability to interact directly with the minds of others.
The Way does not require isolation. Venthari may advise other communities, share knowledge, or intervene when psionic or planar threats place others at risk.
Trust can nevertheless be difficult when telepathy and mental influence are involved. The Three Rings address this by placing especially strict limits on intrusive psionic abilities, and followers are expected to exercise greater restraint when another person's thoughts, emotions, or autonomy are at stake.
Communication, defense, and protection generally carry fewer ethical concerns than abilities that override another person's will. This distinction shapes how followers of the Way are taught to use their powers when dealing with both Venthari and outsiders.
