Essence Beyond the Soul
Souls are one form through which individual identity continues in Eldareth, but they are far from the only one.
Elementals can possess stable identities through elemental essence. Celestials, Axisborn, and Fiends exist through the essence of the Outer Planes. Val'Syra supports beings whose identities are sustained through oneiric essence.
These beings can think, remember, form relationships, build societies, and develop distinct personalities without participating in the soul cycles followed by mortals, Fey, or nature spirits. Their continued existence depends upon the form of essence from which they arise.
Elemental Essence
Elemental beings arise from the substance and power of the Inner Planes.
Their bodies and identities are formed through elemental essence. Earth, air, fire, and water can gather into coherent beings capable of movement and awareness, ranging from relatively simple elemental spirits to individuals with complex memories, personalities, cultures, and ambitions.
The stability of that identity varies considerably. Some elementals possess little more than instinct and a limited awareness of their surroundings, while others develop into enduring individuals capable of maintaining relationships and communities across immense spans of time.
Elemental Identity
An elemental's identity exists through the organization of its elemental essence.
A fire elemental consists of far more than ordinary flame, just as an earth elemental is more than moving stone. Its physical substance, elemental power, awareness, and individual pattern together form the creature.
Greater intelligence does not change this foundation. A sapient elemental may speak several languages, practice magic, create art, preserve history, or govern a settlement while remaining entirely elemental in nature.
This allows the Elemental Planes to support native peoples and civilizations whose inhabitants possess no conventional souls.
Elemental Death
When an ordinary elemental is truly destroyed, the coherent structure that made it an individual breaks apart. Its elemental substance disperses and returns to the surrounding plane.
The essence remains part of the element from which it arose, while the particular individual may cease to exist.
Another elemental could eventually form from some of the same substance. Such a creature would possess its own identity unless the original elemental's individual pattern had somehow survived the destruction.
The survival of that pattern is what separates ordinary elemental dispersal from the restoration seen among more stable elemental beings.
Genies
Dao, Djinn, Efreet, and Marids are among the most strongly individuated elemental peoples.
Their elemental identities can preserve memory, personality, relationships, and cultural continuity for extraordinary lengths of time. A genie may therefore possess a far stronger ability to survive the destruction of its current form than a common elemental.
When a genie is destroyed away from its native Elemental Plane, enough of its elemental identity can survive for its essence to return home. Given time, that essence can gather into a new form, allowing the same individual to continue.
The process has no fixed duration. The nature of the genie, the extent of the destruction, and conditions within the native plane can all affect how long reconstitution takes.
Complete destruction within the genie's native Elemental Plane is considerably more dangerous. If the elemental pattern carrying the individual's identity is fully dispersed there, the genie can cease to exist permanently.
Other Elemental Beings
Genies are only one expression of highly developed elemental life.
Ancient elemental spirits, powerful native rulers, unusual elemental peoples, and other beings may develop identities stable enough to survive forms of destruction that would permanently disperse a lesser elemental. Their capabilities depend upon the nature of the individual rather than a universal progression shared by all elementals.
Elemental beings can also change substantially over time. Greater concentrations of elemental power, unusual magic, planar conditions, or other influences may alter their bodies and capabilities while preserving the identity carried by their elemental essence.
Elemental Ancestry
Elemental ancestry does not make a mortal an elemental being.
Genasi possess living bodies, anima, and mortal souls. Their elemental heritage influences their physical traits and supernatural abilities while leaving them part of the mortal cycle of life and death.
A transformation that genuinely changed a mortal into an elemental would have to alter the individual's underlying metaphysical nature. Acquiring elemental magic or physical characteristics alone would not produce such a change.
Energy-Born Beings
The Positive and Negative Energy Planes can also produce beings whose existence resembles elemental life in several respects.
Such creatures arise through stable concentrations of the energy native to their plane. Their identities can persist without anima or conventional souls, even when they possess intelligence and complex behavior.
Positive Energy is associated with vitality, but a native being composed of that energy does not participate in anima merely because of that association. Likewise, a native creature of Negative Energy is a distinct form of existence rather than an undead creature by default.
When a simple energy-born being is destroyed, its substance can disperse back into its native plane. Exceptionally stable individuals may possess greater continuity and their own means of reconstitution.
Planar Essence
True inhabitants of the Outer Planes exist through planar essence.
Celestials arise from the Upper Planes, Axisborn from the Axis Planes, and Fiends from the Lower Planes. These categories encompass many different peoples and creatures whose forms, intelligence, cultures, and origins vary considerably.
A true planar being exists as a coherent expression of its native plane. Its body and identity share the same metaphysical foundation, allowing the individual to persist without a separate soul.
Celestials
Celestials are native to the Upper Planes of Celestia, Elysium, and Arborea.
Archons and Guardinals are well-known examples, though Celestial existence extends beyond these groups. The Upper Planes contain native creatures, spirits, and peoples that have never lived mortal lives.
Some Celestials have humanoid forms, while others resemble animals or take shapes without any close mortal equivalent. A stag, bird, or other animal-like Celestial can simply be a native expression of its plane rather than the spirit of an animal that died elsewhere.
The plane itself supplies the essence through which the Celestial exists.
Axisborn
Axisborn are the true planar beings of Concordium, the Outlands, and Pandemonium.
The term includes peoples as different as Modrons, Rilmani, Slaadi, Navan, Aveneva, and Shardminds. Sharing an Axisborn nature does not give these beings a common culture, purpose, or philosophy.
Their forms reflect very different planar environments. Concordium supports highly ordered expressions of planar life, the Outlands produces its own adaptable inhabitants, and Pandemonium gives rise to beings shaped by its mutable nature.
Slaadi belong to this planar family. Their origins lie within Pandemonium, and Eldarethian scholars classify them as Axisborn rather than as Aberrations associated with the Far Realm.
Fiends
Fiends are the true planar beings of the Lower Planes.
Devils belong to Baator, Gloomfiends to the Gray Wastes, and Demons to the Abyss. Each plane also supports other native Fiendish creatures that do not belong to these better-known peoples.
Fiends can arise through native planar processes or through the transformation of mortal petitioners. Once such a transformation is complete, both origins lead to the same broad form of planar existence.
A Demon that arose directly from the Abyss and one that was once mortal are both genuine Fiends. Their different origins remain part of their histories without changing their present metaphysical nature.
Planar Incarnates
Many Outer Planar beings arise directly from the essence of their native plane.
Such beings are sometimes described as planar incarnates. The term concerns origin rather than creature type.
A Modron formed within Concordium is still Axisborn. A native creature of Celestia is still a Celestial, while a Demon that arose directly from the Abyss is still a Fiend.
Once a stable individual identity forms, the being can develop independently. Native planar creatures can change their beliefs, pursue personal goals, form relationships, and disagree with others from the same plane.
Planar origin influences their nature without reducing every inhabitant of a plane to the same personality or purpose.
Transcended Beings
Some planar beings began as mortal souls.
A petitioner that undergoes complete planar transformation becomes fully integrated into the essence of its destination. The same individual continues, carrying forward the identity and history that existed before the transformation.
An Archon who was once mortal now exists through Celestial essence. A former petitioner transformed into a Gloomfiend exists through Fiendish planar essence, while Navan and Shardminds continue through the essence of their respective Axis Planes.
The transformed individual thereafter follows the same fundamental rules as other true planar beings of that plane.
Destruction and Reformation
A true Outer Planar being is difficult to destroy permanently while it is away from its native plane.
When its manifested form is destroyed elsewhere, the coherent planar identity can return toward the plane from which it arises. A new form eventually develops there, restoring the same individual with its memories and identity intact.
Reformation has no universal timetable. The being's power, the severity of its destruction, conditions within the plane, divine influence, and other circumstances can all affect the process.
This continuity is a property of the planar identity itself. The individual returns because the essence carrying that identity survived long enough to reach its metaphysical home.
True Planar Death
Complete destruction within the native plane can end a planar being permanently.
In such cases, the coherent essence sustaining the individual disperses into the surrounding plane. The planar substance remains, while the particular identity that once organized it may be lost.
A being that once lived as a mortal petitioner does not return to its earlier soul-state after such a death. Its transformation into a planar being was permanent, and its identity had become fully carried by planar essence.
Some exceptionally powerful entities possess unusual protections, anchors, divine connections, or other means of survival. These cases depend upon the individual and do not define the ordinary fate of planar beings.
Native Planar Life
The Outer Planes contain complete environments rather than populations made entirely from dead mortals.
Native animals, predators, spirits, peoples, and other forms of planar life can arise without any connection to petitioner souls. Some possess sophisticated intelligence and civilizations, while others occupy ecological roles similar to animals in the Material Plane.
Their metaphysical nature comes from the plane itself.
This is why outward appearance can be misleading. A Celestial wolf, Axisborn hound, or Fiendish predator may behave much like an animal while following the same planar rules as other native beings of its realm.
Oneiric Essence
Val'Syra supports beings whose existence is sustained through oneiric essence, a form of metaphysical substance associated with the Dreaming.
Oneiric essence can sustain stable individual identities capable of memory, emotion, thought, relationships, and continued personal development. These beings possess neither anima nor conventional souls. Their identity is carried by the oneiric existence from which they are formed.
Valreni, persistent Dreamborn, and some native creatures of Val'Syra are known examples of beings that exist in this way.
Oneiric Identity
A stable oneiric being exists as an independent individual.
Its memories, personality, experiences, and sense of self belong to that continuing identity, allowing the being to change and develop through new experiences. This separates persistent oneiric life from the countless temporary people, creatures, and other forms that appear within ordinary dreams.
Some Dreamborn demonstrate how that distinction can develop. A figure originally shaped through dreaming may, under unusual circumstances, persist independently and acquire an identity of its own. Once established in this way, its continued existence no longer depends upon the mortal mind that first contributed to its creation.
Mortals and Oneiric Essence
A mortal who dreams of Val'Syra remains a mortal.
Their living body continues to carry anima and a soul, while their dreaming consciousness experiences the realm. Contact with oneiric beings or prolonged exposure to the Dreaming does not by itself change that underlying nature.
Dream-Touched mortals provide a more persistent example of this connection. Their relationship with Val'Syra may be unusually strong, but they retain anima and a mortal soul and continue to follow the ordinary mortal cycle of life and death.
Oneiric influence can therefore become a significant part of a mortal's life without turning the individual into an oneiric being.
Luminaries
Luminaries represent one of the closest known relationships between mortal and oneiric existence.
A Luminary is formed through a voluntary bond between a mortal and a Valreni. The two share a single embodied life while remaining distinct individuals.
The mortal retains their anima and mortal soul. The Valreni retains its own oneiric essence and independent identity. Neither becomes part of the other's soul, and the bond does not create a new combined soul.
The relationship can allow memories, perceptions, and experiences to be shared between them, but both participants continue to possess their own histories and perspectives.
If the mortal dies, their anima returns to the living cycle and their soul follows the ordinary passage through Athael. The Valreni remains an oneiric being and returns fully to Val'Syra.
Resurrection restores the mortal rather than automatically restoring the bond. If both individuals still exist, any renewal of that relationship must occur between them again.
Somnians
Somnians illustrate a very different interaction between mortal and oneiric existence.
A Somnian remains fully mortal, possessing anima and a mortal soul. Their unusual nature allows a deeper degree of contact with certain oneiric beings than is normally possible for a waking mortal.
During such an occupation, two independent identities remain present. The oneiric being may observe through, influence, suppress, or control the mortal to varying degrees, but it does not become the mortal's soul and does not replace the individual's metaphysical identity.
The distinction remains even when the influence is severe. Removing the oneiric presence can restore the mortal's independence, although memories, emotions, behavior, or perception may have been altered by the experience.
The death of a Somnian follows the ordinary mortal path. Their anima returns to the wider cycle and their soul continues toward Athael, while the oneiric being remains a separate individual.
The origins of the unusual compatibility associated with Somnians remain poorly understood.
Oneiric Death
Stable oneiric beings can be permanently destroyed.
When the coherent oneiric identity sustaining an individual is completely broken apart, its essence disperses back into Val'Syra and that individual ceases to exist.
The same essence may later contribute to other oneiric beings or phenomena without restoring the person who was lost. Continuity depends upon the survival of the individual identity itself.
Temporary manifestations are a different matter. Destroying a projection or limited expression of an oneiric being does not necessarily destroy the underlying individual while its true identity remains intact.
Oneiric essence therefore carries identity in its own way, separate from anima and the soul. Luminaries and Somnians demonstrate that this form of existence can interact very closely with mortal life while the metaphysical identities involved remain distinct.
Identity Without Souls
Elemental, planar, and oneiric beings demonstrate that individual existence takes several forms throughout Eldareth's cosmology.
Elemental essence can organize itself into stable people and civilizations. The Outer Planes can give rise to Celestials, Axisborn, and Fiends whose identities are carried directly through planar essence. Val'Syra can sustain independent minds through oneiric essence.
Each follows its own rules of persistence and death.
A soul remains central to the continuing identity of mortals, Fey, and nature spirits. For many other beings, the substance through which they exist already carries everything required for memory, personality, choice, and continuity.
