Demigods, Progenitors of the Dwarves

The Jarl Triumvirate consists of Thalkor, Saaktar, and Thorden, three giant Jarls who fought against the Primordial Titans during the Dawn War. Thalkor came from the Stone Giants, Saaktar from the Fire Giants, and Thorden from the Storm Giants.

All three emerged from the conflict as Demigods. In the years that followed, they established Thuradun, the Forge of Wills, where the first dwarves were created. The Ironcrest, Emberforge, and Runeborn each trace their origin to one of the three Jarls.

Their worship extends beyond the dwarven peoples. Giants and giantkin, including goliaths, continue to honor them, and their faith has also taken root among some human communities in Skorrheim.

Symbol

The Triumvirate is represented by three interlocking angular forms joined around a shared center. Each represents one of the Jarls, while the complete design reflects the bond between them.

The symbol is most often used when the three are honored together. Dwarven lineages sometimes give greater prominence to the portion associated with their own progenitor.

The Three Jarls

Thalkor

Thalkor was a Jarl of the Stone Giants and the progenitor of the Ironcrest dwarves.

He is traditionally depicted as an immense Stone Giant with a broad frame and skin resembling weathered rock. His appearance is usually severe and unadorned, with stone and iron used to mark his rank.

Ironcrest traditions connect Thalkor with endurance, responsibility, and the obligation to leave strong foundations for those who follow. Their stone-like physical traits are also traced to his part in their creation.

He is commonly shown carrying a great hammer or resting one hand upon unfinished stone.

Saaktar

Saaktar was a Jarl of the Fire Giants and the progenitor of the Emberforge dwarves.

He is depicted as a towering Fire Giant clad in heavy armor blackened by heat. In many representations, the metal glows along its seams as though it has only recently left the forge, while flame gathers around him without consuming what he wears.

Emberforge traditions connect Saaktar with strength, craft, and the discipline required to master difficult work. He is often invoked when skill is tested or when a task demands persistence beyond ordinary effort.

He is commonly shown carrying a forge hammer or a great blade still glowing from the heat of its making.

Thorden

Thorden was a Jarl of the Storm Giants and the progenitor of the Runeborn dwarves.

He is usually depicted as a tall Storm Giant with pale blue or gray skin and long hair moving in a constant wind. Lightning appears frequently around him, and runes are worked into his clothing or armor.

Runeborn traditions connect Thorden with judgment, foresight, and the understanding of forces powerful enough to become dangerous when poorly handled. These ideas remain closely tied to their traditions of rune work and stormcraft.

He is commonly shown carrying a rune-carved spear or staff.

The Dawn War

Thalkor, Saaktar, and Thorden fought against the Primordial Titans during the Dawn War and were among the great giant champions remembered from the conflict.

Following the Titans' defeat, portions of their immense power were bestowed upon a small number of those who had fought against them. Thalkor, Saaktar, and Thorden were among those changed, as were the five dragons later known as the Dragon Ascendants.

Why these individuals were chosen is not clearly preserved in surviving traditions. By the end of the Dawn War, however, the three Jarls had become Demigods.

Thuradun, the Forge of Wills

After the Dawn War, the Triumvirate established Thuradun deep beneath the mountains of Skorrheim. Giant clans took part in the immense work required to raise and shape the complex, though the three Jarls remained responsible for its greatest workings.

At the heart of Thuradun stood the Forge of Wills and its Anima Core. There, Thalkor, Saaktar, and Thorden relinquished much of the power bestowed upon them after the Dawn War and used it in the creation of the first dwarves.

From their work came the three dwarven lineages. Thalkor gave rise to the Ironcrest, Saaktar to the Emberforge, and Thorden to the Runeborn. Each carried traits associated with its progenitor, though all three shared the same origin within Thuradun.

Their creation permanently diminished the power of the Jarls, but established a people capable of enduring long after them. The shared origin of the three lineages remains an important part of dwarven tradition despite thousands of years of separate clan histories.

Thuradun remains the birthplace of the dwarven peoples and the greatest work associated with the Triumvirate after the Dawn War.

Worship and Influence

Worship of the Triumvirate differs among the peoples who honor them.

Among dwarves, the Jarls are regarded as creators and ancestors. All three are usually honored together, though each lineage gives particular reverence to its own progenitor. Their teachings appear frequently in traditions concerning ancestry, craft, communal responsibility, and works intended to endure beyond the lifetime of their makers.

Giants remember them through a different history. Thalkor, Saaktar, and Thorden were Jarls before they became Demigods, and stories of their lives before Thuradun remain important within giant traditions.

Goliaths and other giantkin preserve their own accounts of the Triumvirate, often emphasizing the responsibility that comes with strength and the expectation that ability should serve more than personal ambition.

Their worship has also spread among humans in Skorrheim through generations of contact with dwarves and giantkin. The Jarls are particularly respected in communities where difficult work, defense, and responsibility for others are part of daily life.

Their faith has no single central authority. A dwarven hold, giant settlement, goliath community, and human town may honor the same three Jarls through very different customs.

Tenets

• Build with those who come after you in mind.

• Let skill be proven through practice and effort.

• Use strength in defense of those placed in your care.

• Keep faith with kin, companions, and those who depend upon your word.

• Preserve what was entrusted to you and improve what you can.

• Meet hardship with resolve.

• Honor sacrifice through what you choose to do with what it has given you.

The Withdrawal

After the creation of the dwarves, accounts of the Triumvirate become less frequent.

Most traditions hold that Thalkor, Saaktar, and Thorden eventually withdrew from the mortal world. Some place their departure soon after their work at Thuradun was complete, while others suggest they remained for considerably longer.

What became of them is uncertain. No surviving account establishes where they went, whether they left together, or whether they still endure somewhere beyond mortal reach.

Their disappearance did little to diminish their place among the peoples who worship them. The dwarves, together with the traditions preserved by giants and giantkin, remain the strongest legacy of the three Jarls.
