Galarium is a naturally occurring magical crystal formed through prolonged exposure to strong, stable concentrations of ley energy. It is one of Eldareth's most important magical materials and has been used for centuries in enchantment, arcane instruments, magical machinery, and large-scale engineering.

Galarium is exceptionally receptive to magical energy. When properly worked, it can conduct, retain, regulate, and support the amplification of magical power. It does not generate that power on its own. A Galarium device still requires an enchantment, stored charge, ley connection, spellwork, or another source of magical energy.

Formation and Ley Lines

Galarium develops where concentrated magical energy remains stable over very long periods.

Major ley nexuses and powerful ley currents provide especially favorable conditions, though smaller deposits can form anywhere similar magical conditions persist for centuries.

Galarium forms because of these conditions. It does not create ley lines or hold the ley network together.

Responsible extraction does not inherently damage a ley current, though careless mining, severe depletion, or direct manipulation of the surrounding ley system can create much greater risks.

Galarium grows extremely slowly. Surviving deposits can produce new crystalline growth while the conditions that formed them remain intact, but meaningful regeneration occurs over centuries rather than years.

Appearance

Natural Galarium is translucent or semi-translucent and possesses a pronounced internal luminosity.

Common colors include blue, cyan, gold, amber, and occasional violet. Several colors can occur within the same formation, often appearing more like light moving through the crystal than ordinary mineral banding.

Natural Galarium can form as veins, irregular clusters, dense crystalline masses, projecting growths, or isolated coherent structures.

Worked Galarium is often cut, polished, aligned, or faceted according to its intended function.

Healthy Galarium can glow softly or produce a faint magical hum. More noticeable light, arcing, or fluctuation can occur when the material is heavily charged, under significant magical load, damaged, or exposed to unstable magic.

Understanding Galarium

Four characteristics are used when assessing or working with Galarium:

Purity: The physical quality and coherence of the crystal.

Refinement: The magical function deliberately developed within the material.

Form: The physical and technical role in which the Galarium is being used.

Charge State: The magical energy currently being held, transmitted, received, or managed by the Galarium.

These characteristics are related but separate. A valuable Galarium Core can be completely uncharged, while an ordinary Shard can be placed under a dangerous magical load.

Purity

Purity describes the physical quality of a Galarium specimen.

Its value can be affected by fractures, inclusions, contamination, crystalline coherence, natural geometry, and general structural condition.

Higher-quality Galarium is often better suited to demanding refinement or projects requiring a single coherent crystal.

Galarium does not use universal quality grades. There is no standard category such as "Pristine Galarium." Particularly fine specimens are simply assessed individually and can be worth substantially more than ordinary material of the same weight.

Purity does not determine a Galarium specimen's Properties. Those are established through refinement.

Functional Refinement

Refinement directs Galarium's natural magical receptiveness toward a practical function.

The four established Galarium Properties are shown below.

Property Function
Conductive Carries magical energy efficiently through an enchantment or engineered system.
Retentive Holds magical charge or an imposed magical effect for later use or release.
Regulating Moderates, stabilizes, restricts, or controls magical flow and fluctuation.
Amplifying Supports Formulae designed to increase the intensity or effective potency of magical output.

These are crafting Properties rather than automatic powers.

Conductive Galarium does not automatically deal Lightning damage. Retentive Galarium does not automatically contain spell slots or item charges. Regulating Galarium does not stabilize every magical phenomenon, and Amplifying Galarium does not automatically increase spell damage or saving throw DCs.

The Recipe, Formula, Component, or engineered system determines what the refined Galarium actually does.

A single Galarium specimen can support more than one Property when its quality, physical structure, and intended use allow it.

Galarium Forms

Galarium is commonly encountered in several established forms.

Form Material Type Baseline Value Typical Role Common Refinement Tendency
Raw Galarium Mineral Approximately 100 gp per lb. Unrefined magical mineral None
Refined Solid Galarium Mineral Approximately 200 gp per lb. Prepared magical material Varies by refinement
Galarium Shard Mineral Variable; a common 0.25 lb. Shard is approximately 50 gp Focused discrete magical element Conductive, Amplifying
Galarium Core Mineral Individually assessed Central energy-handling structure Conductive, Retentive, Regulating
Galarium Dust Reagent Approximately 250 gp per lb. Distributed magical Reagent Conductive, Amplifying

Form does not determine refinement. A Shard is not automatically Conductive, and a Core is not automatically Retentive or Regulating.

The individual specimen or crafting requirement determines which Properties it possesses.

Raw Galarium

Material Type: Mineral
Baseline Value: Approximately 100 gp per lb.
Properties: None normally assigned
Affinity: None
Direct Use: None

Raw Galarium is extracted natural crystal that has not yet undergone technical refinement.

Its natural purity, geometry, fractures, inclusions, and coherence still matter because these determine how much useful refined material can be produced and whether particular structures should be preserved intact.

Raw Galarium is already normally stable. Refinement prepares it for controlled magical work rather than making an inherently unstable crystal safe.

Ordinary Raw Galarium produces approximately 70 to 80 percent of its weight as usable refined Galarium. For general estimates, use a 75 percent yield.

Refined Galarium

Material Type: Mineral
Baseline Value: Approximately 200 gp per lb.
Properties: Conductive, Retentive, Regulating, and/or Amplifying as established by refinement
Affinity: None
Direct Use: None

Refined Galarium has been assessed, cut, shaped, aligned, polished, and functionally prepared for controlled magical work.

The resulting crystal may be used directly or shaped into a Shard, Core, or another appropriate Galarium input.

Its final Properties depend on the refinement performed.

Galarium Shards

A Galarium Shard is a discrete coherent piece of refined Galarium intended for use as an individual magical input.

Shard describes form rather than quality or price.

A common trade-sized Shard weighs approximately 0.25 lb. and is worth about 50 gp at ordinary craft-grade quality. This is a common commercial example, not a fixed denomination.

Shards can be larger, smaller, cheaper, or considerably more valuable.

They are commonly used in wands, Arcane Foci, amulets, rods, staves, portable magical devices, and other constructions requiring a compact coherent crystal.

Conductive and Amplifying refinements are common in these applications, though other combinations are possible.

Some Formulae require one coherent Shard of a minimum Value. In such cases, several smaller Shards cannot be combined merely because their total Value is equal to the requirement.

Galarium Cores

A Galarium Core is Galarium prepared to serve as a central energy-handling structure within a magical system.

Core describes function rather than a fixed size or weight.

A Core can consist of one coherent crystal, a specially shaped crystal, several matched crystals, or a more elaborate aligned structure.

Small devices can contain compact Cores, while major magical machinery can use much larger Core assemblies.

Cores commonly favor Conductive, Retentive, and Regulating refinements because they are frequently used in systems that handle sustained magical energy.

Core Value is assessed individually and can reflect the amount of Galarium used, purity, coherence, geometry, refinement, alignment, and technical preparation.

Galarium Dust

Material Type: Reagent
Baseline Value: Approximately 250 gp per lb.
Tracked Quantity: Weight
Properties: Determined by preparation
Affinity: None
Direct Use: None

Galarium Dust is a deliberately manufactured form of Galarium used when the material must be distributed through another substance or across a surface.

Mine debris, accidental powder, explosion residue, or casually crushed Galarium does not automatically count as usable Galarium Dust.

Suitable refined Galarium can be processed into Dust at approximately 1 lb. of input per workday, producing about 80 percent of the original weight as usable Dust.

A common commercial pouch contains approximately 0.2 lb. of Dust and is worth about 50 gp.

Galarium Dust is used in magical inks, pigments, inscriptions, coatings, resins, alchemical preparations, glasswork, and other Formulae where coherent crystal is less useful than finely distributed Galarium.

Galarium Dust never qualifies for the standard Galarium-Assisted Crafting time reduction.

Galarium Refinement

Galarium Refinement is the foundational Formula used to assess and functionally prepare Galarium.

Required Tool: Jeweler's Tools
Tool Proficiency: Required
Required Skill: Arcana
Required Facility: Appropriate specialist workshop
Formula Required: Galarium Refinement

A trained specialist can normally refine approximately 1 lb. of ordinary Raw Galarium during one 8-hour workday.

Routine work with healthy material, the correct Formula, appropriate tools, and a suitable workshop does not normally require an ability check.

The Galarium Refinement Formula can produce Conductive, Retentive, Regulating, or Amplifying Galarium. These are different applications of the same Formula rather than four separate Formulae.

Checks become appropriate when damaged material, contamination, unstable magic, experimental work, inadequate facilities, or another genuine complication makes the result uncertain.

Knowing Galarium Refinement teaches the crafter how to prepare Galarium. It does not automatically teach every item, Component, or machine that can be made from it.

Galarium Scribing Ink

Galarium Scribing Ink is an established processed material made from Conductive Galarium Dust suspended in a prepared liquid medium.

Material Type: Reagent
Tracked Quantity: 1 batch, approximately 1 ounce
Finished Value: 20 gp
Property: Conductive
Affinity: None
Direct Use: None

The ink allows Conductive Galarium to be distributed through written lines, diagrams, runes, inscriptions, and fine magical interfaces.

It can be used by Formulae involving specialist Spell Scrolls, magical diagrams, runic Components, warding patterns, technical inscriptions, or other magical writing.

Galarium Scribing Ink does not make an inscription magical by itself and does not activate Galarium-Assisted Crafting.

Its complete crafting procedure appears in Special Recipes & Formulae.

Galarium and Ingredient Credit

Appropriate Galarium can provide Ingredient Credit when a Recipe or Formula recognizes its role.

For magic-item construction, recognized Galarium Value can satisfy part of the item's Magical Raw-Material Budget.

For example, if an Uncommon magic item has a 200 gp Magical Raw-Material Budget and its Formula accepts a 50 gp Galarium Shard, that Shard can provide 50 gp of recognized material credit. The remaining magical materials are then 150 gp.

A named Galarium requirement must still be satisfied.

If a Formula requires a Galarium Shard, Galarium Core, Galarium Dust, particular refined Properties, or one coherent specimen of a minimum Value, an equal amount of unrelated magical material does not replace it.

Galarium-Assisted Crafting

Appropriate refined solid Galarium can reduce the Crafting Time of some nonconsumable magic items.

To qualify, the Galarium must:

  • be coherent refined solid Galarium

  • perform a meaningful role in the enchantment

  • possess refinement appropriate to the project

  • provide recognized Value equal to at least 20 percent of the item's original Magical Raw-Material Budget

When these requirements are met, reduce the item's base Crafting Time by 20 percent.

Magic-Item Rarity Original Magical Raw-Material Budget Minimum Qualifying Galarium Value Base Crafting Time Galarium-Assisted Crafting Time
Common 50 gp 10 gp 5 workdays 4 workdays
Uncommon 200 gp 40 gp 10 workdays 8 workdays
Rare 2,000 gp 400 gp 50 workdays 40 workdays
Very Rare 20,000 gp 4,000 gp 125 workdays 100 workdays
Legendary 100,000 gp 20,000 gp 250 workdays 200 workdays

The threshold is calculated from the original Magical Raw-Material Budget before Ingredient Credit or other recognized credits are deducted.

The same qualifying Galarium can provide Ingredient Credit and satisfy the Galarium-Assisted Crafting threshold. These affect different parts of the project.

Additional qualifying Galarium beyond the threshold does not increase the time reduction.

Galarium-Assisted Crafting does not make the finished item stronger. It changes the construction process, not the finished item's statistics.

Galarium Dust and Galarium Scribing Ink do not qualify for this standard benefit.

Consumables, Spell Scrolls, Potion of Healing, and projects with their own specialized crafting procedures do not automatically use this rule.

Large engineering projects use their own Plans and construction requirements instead.

Magical Capacity and Charge

Galarium can hold and manage substantial magical energy, but there is no universal amount of magical capacity per pound.

Safe magical load depends on the specimen's quantity, purity, coherence, refinement, geometry, Charge State, surrounding system, rate of magical flow, and environmental conditions.

This is why two Galarium specimens of similar weight can perform very different roles.

A crystal's Value is also not a direct measurement of how much magical energy it currently contains.

Stability and Failure

Healthy, uncharged Galarium is normally stable.

Breaking ordinary Galarium can reduce its Value, ruin a useful refinement, or destroy the coherence required by a Formula. It does not normally cause a magical explosion.

Risk increases when Galarium is heavily charged, overloaded, badly cracked, exposed to unstable magic, connected to damaged machinery, or subjected to major ley fluctuations.

Warning signs can include stronger luminosity, uncontrolled arcing, cracking, sudden changes in magical resonance, or unstable discharge.

The consequences of failure depend on the actual system involved. They can range from loss of function or cracking to magical discharge and cascading system failure.

Under extreme conditions, major Galarium failures can contribute to Wild Magic or Spellfire.

Collection and Storage

Healthy Raw Galarium, refined Shards, and uncharged Cores do not normally require magical containment.

They should be protected from severe impact, contamination, structural damage, and unnecessary magical disturbance.

Small Shards are commonly transported in padded cases or compartmented boxes.

Galarium Dust should be kept in securely closed containers suitable for a fine magical Reagent.

Large Cores require support appropriate to their size and geometry.

Charged, damaged, unstable, or contaminated Galarium may require specialist containment.

Mining and Recovery

Natural Galarium can be mined safely with appropriate care.

Professional extraction pays particular attention to crystal geometry, fractures, coherent structures, and the surrounding ley environment.

Careless work can destroy valuable specimens, reduce Yield, or damage an existing formation.

Because Galarium grows on a timescale of centuries, intensive mining can leave an otherwise healthy deposit commercially exhausted for generations.

Galarium recovered from a magic item, Component, ruin, or engineered system remains Galarium if the material physically survives.

Recovered Galarium can be intact, discharged, cracked, contaminated, damaged, or unsuitable for its former purpose. It must be assessed in its current condition.

Breaking a Shard or Core does not automatically produce usable Galarium Dust.

Trade

Galarium is a valuable strategic commodity but is not inherently contraband.

Healthy material circulates through specialist trade involving artificers, enchanters, refiners, magical institutions, engineering workshops, mineral merchants, and mining organizations.

Small commercial transactions can involve Shards, Dust, modest Raw Galarium stock, or individual specialist crystals.

Large shipments, productive deposits, exceptional specimens, major Cores, and infrastructure-scale quantities attract considerably more commercial and political attention.

Local law varies. Charged, unstable, damaged, or contaminated Galarium can be subject to much stricter controls than ordinary healthy material.

Galarium in Arcane Engineering

Galarium remains one of the principal materials used in Eldareth's advanced magical engineering.

Refined Galarium appears in Components, diagnostic instruments, regulated magical distribution systems, charging and calibration infrastructure, and systems designed to interact with ley-derived power.

Large engineering projects use Galarium according to their individual Plans rather than treating it as a universal magical fuel.

Galarium receives, conducts, retains, regulates, or helps shape magical energy supplied by the surrounding system. It does not replace the need for an actual power source.

The Special Recipes & Formulae section contains established Galarium Formulae and engineering procedures when those projects become relevant.
